Abstract
Universities are major hub for skills development. Similarly, industries engage graduates as floor, middle and top level personnel to occupy different roles and make critical decisions. There is however, evidence to the effect that, risky alcohol consumption exist among university students. It is therefore, relevant that, the alcohol consumption behaviour which can lower their productivity is investigated scientifically. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of the motivational interviewing (MI) treatment on alcohol consumption among the participants. Quasi-experimental design was used and one hypothesis postulated and tested. Simple random sampling was used to select one academic department and one programme of study each from the two main campuses with a population of 800 being third year students. Using Krejcie and Morgan’s table, 260 target population were selected at random and was administered the questionnaire. 53 met the inclusion criteria; however, 40 participants were selected at random for the intervention. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analyzed using one-way ANCOVA. The findings showed the MI treatment was effective in reducing alcohol consumption among the participants significantly. It is recommended that University Counsellors should use the MI treatment in counselling the students with risky alcohol consumption behaviour.
