Examining Continuous Assessment as a Toolbox for Improving Academic Performance among Secondary School Social Studies Students in Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examines Continuous Assessment as a toolbox for improving academic performance among secondary school social Studies students in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study employed the descriptive survey design. The study was guided by three research hypotheses. The population for this study comprised total population of secondary school Social Studies teachers in the study area. The sample for this study consisted of 240 Social Studies teachers drawn from (150 public and 90 private) randomly selected secondary schools in the area of study. The research instrument used for this study was structured questionnaire. Quantitative data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test while qualitative data were content analyzed. Findings revealed that there is a significant difference in Social Studies teachers’ implementation of Continuous Assessment in Junior Secondary Schools in terms of comprehensiveness and attainability. There is difference between public and private junior secondary schools in the provision of infrastructural facilities, equipment, materials and funds for the implementation of Continuous assessment. Qualitative finding revealed that teachers said that the level of clarity, comprehensiveness and validity of C.A they give to their students is very high which helps the students’ academic performance in Social Studies. The study recommends that teachers, parents and students should be more actively involved in continuous assessment process. This would create awareness and providing platforms for feedback on how the continuous assessment is impacting learning outcomes.
