ABSTRACT
Self-reliance education refers to the ability of school learners to use knowledge and skills obtained in School to earn a living without depending on their Parents/guardians or foreign donation. The study aimed at reviewing the determinants of education for self-reliance in public primary schools in Lindi municipality-Tanzania. This study employed explanatory sequential research design. The study targeted standard seven pupils, primary education officer, education quality assurer, head teachers and primary school teachers. Purposive sampling technique was used to select five public primary schools and 100 participants. The research tools were questionnaires for teachers and pupils, interview guides for primary school education officers and observation guide for checking self-reliance determinants. The results indicated that self-reliance determinants such as entrepreneurship education, self-reliance classes, sports ground, farming and domestic activities were missing. However, some schools were seen conducting self-reliance based activities such as vegetable gardens, writing stories, group tasks, individual homework, debate, drama and tree farm projects. Based on the findings it was recommended that the government should revise the education policies on the aspect of ESR to see if it is relevant and practical on the context of public primary schools, also provide professional training to teachers on how to run ESR. This will ultimately enhance pupils’ self-reliance knowledge and skills.
